Welcome to Violent Earth
Keeping you up to date with earth activity

Hello and welcome

27th November

Update 27/11 – 09:14
The activity at the eruption area gets even stronger than before. The webcam operator just zoomed out a little to have a wider scoop. Earthquake-report.com expects more action today. A stronger Jacuzzi and from time to time a swelling geyser type action.

Update from earthquake-report

We have just noticed that the harmonic tremor is almost saturated again, the biggest change since the fallback on November 17.

Etna is showing signs today that she could be heading for the 18th paroxysmal eruptive episode in the next few hours.

Keeping you updated.

14th November

14/11/2011 @ 08:52 – So far today there have been 11 earthquake over 1.5 degrees on El Hierro, all except one of them were to the north-west of the island. One of them, measuring 3.2 degrees at 07:28 could be felt by the population. Pevolca have stated recently that they could evacuate the area in 4 hours should there be an imminent eruption threat to the area. The areas population is estimated to be 4,000 people.

Update from earthquake-report

Data Update 13/11 – 10:38 UTC :
A new stain is reported to be forming approx. or on the location of the former jacuzzi. The new stain is brownish at the inside , green at the ourskirts and a layer of foam at the edge.
people currently in La Restinga are reporting a strong gas smell

Data Update 13/11 – 10:27 UTC :
- 10 (volcanic) earthquakes since midnight. The strongest one being a 2.7 magnitude earthquake.
- The depth varying from 18 to 23 km (only -10 km depth would be a very important new event)
- GPS deformation (the change of the surface because of the pressure of the magma) is relatively unchanged, which is one of the indications (in combination with harmonic tremor) that the eruption is probably still going on.

update from canariesnews

12/11/2011 @ 16:34 – So far today there have been 19 earthquakes over 1.5 degrees on the island of El Hierro, the majority of them to the north-west of the island off the coast of Frontera where experts predict there will be a second eruption. The largest measured 2.8 degrees and was felt by some of the residents of the island.

I have watched the cams for some of the day and sometimes you can see a shape forming, at others the sea is perfectly flat.

11th November

11/11/2011 @ 09:01

Scientists are preparing for a new eruption. After a period of calm there was a 4.6 degree earthquake this morning at 00:20. This was located to the north-west of El Hierro. This is the strongest quake to hit the island so far. Scientists claim that data points towards a new eruption off the coast of Frontera, to the north-west of the island as this is where all the lastest earthquakes are being detected. So far today there have been 23 earthquakes over 1.5 degrees on the island, three of these have been felt by the islands population.

9th November

Scientists in La Restinga and Guardia Civil who are currently flying over the earlier jacuzzi location have reported that the vent has probably closed completely. The jacuzzi activity is reported to have completely stopped at the moment. The Roman Margaleff Oceanographic ship is now close to the eruption vent is is problably taking gas and water samples.
The closure of erupting vents is a normal phase in this kind of activity. This does not mean that the volcano activity is completely over. If the volcano continues in the same pattern, the seismic activity may become stronger again as the magma finds the way to the surface has been blocked.

8th November

08/11/2011 @ 20:58 – So far today there have been 57 earthquakes over 1.5 degrees Richter around the island of Hierro. Four of them have been felt by the population. Two of them over 3 degrees

A new column of ash and magma and pyroclasts and gas rises 30 to 35 meters above the jacuzzi. The explosion generated a strong smell of sulfur and an early form of a cypressoid jet a few meters high appeared column

A local  reports that big stones are being ejected out of the water. This can be seen from land, even without binoculars! This is the first time that such activity occurred. It also seems that there is much stronger jacuzzi action this morning

 7th November

Update 07/11 – 17:57 UTC :
The whirlpool activity is still very strong and so is the harmonic tremor graph. The graph shows almost continuous submarine explosions.  The current activity is needed to feed at least 3 active vents who are spewing magmatic material into the sea.  If this current activity continues, the explosive phase or Capelinho’s / Surtseyan phase will start.constantly changing new jacuzzi much to La Restinga than the other two

07/11/2011 @ 12:49 – Residents of La Restinga have been urgently evacuated after the ‘bubbling’ and ‘steaming’ effect increases in intensity and what was described by residents as a ‘huge rock or stone’ was expelled from the epicentre.

La Restinga (El Hierro) urgently evacuated after bubbling & steaming effect increases in intensity.
After little activity yesterday, the underwater volcano eruption has today started to spew out lava and steam off the coast of La Restinga.

Involcan Canary Islands has released data and images showing the water temperature at the Jacuzzi spot.  The difference in temperature in between the normal sea water and the jacuzzi spot is 11 degrees C

6th November

Hierro volcano in the Canary Islands is possibly in a transition between submarine and Surtseyan eruption style.
PEVOLCA confirms a further increase in carbon dioxide emissions in El Hierro The emission of CO2 is one of the parameters of a volcanic eruption precursors but has to be assessed jointly with others, such as deformation and seismicity depth

Reports are coming in that the eruptive vent in the Las Calmas Sea is intensifying again. Harmonic tremor graphs indicate from the early afternoon on that activity is again on the rise.

06/11/2011 @ 11:26 – At 09:50 there has been a 3.4 degree earthquake at a depth of 17km. to the north west of El Hierro off the coast of Frontera.

El Hierro quake 6th November 2011

Data Update 06/11 – 10:12 UTC :

Those reporting from the Las Calmas sea have had to withdraw to another place on the island because of the toxic air close to the coastline. This means that more and more gases are escaping from the jacuzzi vents.

El Hierro earthquake and volcano eruption

More information can be found at http://www.canariesnews.com/2011/09/28/el-hierro-earthquakes-update/

La Restinga has been evacuated as the underwater volcano eruption pumps lava and steam into the air.

underwater eruption pumping lava up to 20 metres above the sea level

Not much is being reported about the eruption at El Hierro so we will bring as much as we can here as it is possible that an eruption is about to happen.

Residents have been evacuated from the town of Los Gusmones on El Hierro as the earthquakes move closer to the coast of the island and are higher in magnitute.

Here is a small list of the latest earthquakes. The earthquakes are getting closer to the surface and coast of El Hierro and are intensifying.  Below are the latest three earthquakes to hit El Hierro:

  05/11/2011 09:44:44 27.7841 -18.0497 20   3.9
  05/11/2011 09:05:00 27.8246 -18.0762 20   3.5
  05/11/2011 08:59:01 27.7804 -18.0565 21   3.0
